CONNECTING TO
GOD THROUGH THE
SOAP METHOD
"He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. - Psalm 1:3
HOW TO SOAP THE BIBLE
Learn how to easily and effectively read, observe, interpret, and apply God's Word.
SCRIPTURE
S
The SOAP method starts with Scripture. Pray to God that He reveals to you whatever it is you should know during this time with Him. Open your Bible to your reading for the day (e.g. devotional, a verse of the day, or even the first page that your fingers lead you to). Read God's Word and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you. When a particular verse(s) stands out to you, write it in your journal.
OBSERVE
O
Starting writing down your observations. This usually comes by asking questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal Jesus to you.
-
What do you think God is saying to you in this scripture?
-
What do you see in the verses that you’re reading?
-
Who is the one speaking, the author, and the audience?
-
Is there a repetition of words?
-
What words stand out to you?
Write down your answers, thoughts, and findings in your journal. This may include the same verse(s) in various translations, cross-references, word studies, etc.
APPLY
A
Here's where it gets really good. It's time to personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Are you receiving some instruction, encouragement, a new promise, or corrections for a particular area of your life? Write how this scripture can apply to you today including any changes you may need to make or actions that need to be taken.
PRAYER
P
As you close out the SOAP method, you'll want to pray on where God is taking you. This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this scripture or even a prayer for a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a conversation between you and God, so be sure to listen to what God has to say! And don't forget to write it out even if it's some sin that He's revealed to you.
