Why Should We Give?
The world wants to put money and materials things to compete with Jesus (Matthew 6:24) for our devotion. One way to show we're in #HarvestMode is with our treasures. Giving allows us to demonstrate that He is more important to us than material things. Christians should be the most generous people on the planet (2 Corinthians 9:6), supporting worthy causes and the local church. There is no organization with more potential to change the world than the local church (Ephesians 3:10). Let's join together by stewarding our resources well for the good of others and to glorify God!

The Bible says in Matthew 6:24 that the top competitor for our commitment to Jesus is money. Giving strengthens our devotion to Christ and frees us to live open-handedly with the gifts God gives us. We trust in Him and His provision instead of our perceived self-sufficiency. As people of faith, we give faithfully and generously.

What is a tithe? The word “tithe” comes from the Hebrew word meaning tenth. It is the practice of giving 10% of your earnings (gross income) to the local church. The act of tithing predates the Old Testament, and we see it taught and modeled all throughout the Bible (Leviticus 27:30, Proverbs 3:9, Malachi 3:10, Matthew 23:23). Tithe is less about obedience and more about living by faith in God’s faithfulness and provision.
What is an offering? An offering is any amount given above the tithe which is freely given by Christians to the work of the Lord, the local church, and/or ministries and missions. God is not nearly as interested in our monetary offerings as He is in our submission and obedience. The truth is that He doesn’t need our resources to accomplish His plans and purposes. After all, He owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10) and needs nothing from us. What He desires, however, and what He values, is the heart that overflows with gratitude and thanksgiving to the God who saved us and who gives us all things, knowing our needs before we even ask (Matthew 6:8). Such a heart gives generously, willingly, and cheerfully in response to the love and grace that abound in Christ (2 Corinthians 9:6–8).
What are the different levels of giving? The 5 levels of giving are Beginning, Intentional, Tither, Expanding, and Extravagant. For more on each of these levels, watch this series on God's Generosity Pathway.
